I Thessalonians 5:21 Often the statement is made, “Why, it doesn’t make any difference what you believe, just so you are sincere.” Many are quick to to say that one church is as good as another and that all are going to Heaven, but that they are just taking different roads. Often those who claim it makes no difference what one believes are very critical of those who criticize false doctrines. They are opposed to anyone who is opposed to anything, and they think a religion is wrong if it says some religion is wrong, Such a philosophy fights fighting, contends against contending, and argues against arguing. DOES IT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE? Nothing is more clearly taught in the Bible than the fact
that certain things in religion are right and certain things are wrong.
Jesus and His disciples exposed and strongly denounced the false religions
about them. They maintained that the way of religious truth is “strait”
and “narrow.” (Matthew 7:13-14.)
“But in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandmentsIt makes a difference to God what men believe and do. If it made no difference, God would not warn against apostasy (I Timothy 4:1), He would not condemn false teachers (Matthew 7:15), and He would not demand that people follow the Bible. (II Timothy 3:15-17) Christ will reap vengeance on those who do not obey Him. (II Thessalonians 1:8) IF IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE If it makes no difference to the person involved, why does he restrict his religion to his own denomination? Why will he boycott others and keep his family divided religiously? Why not attend all, be a member of all, and contribute to all churches if one is as good as another? THE NAME If it makes no difference what name we wear in religion, why not
wear the name “Christian”? (Acts 11:26; Acts 26:28; I Peter 4:16) And why
hyphenate this Biblical name and say we are this-Christians or that –Christians
instead of just plain Christians?
BAPTISM If one believes that it makes no difference whether he is baptized,
then why not go ahead and do it? Baptism obeys Christ (Mark 16:15-16);
it is commanded (Acts l0:48); it puts one into Christ (Romans 6:3-4; Galatians
3:26-27); it is necessary (note “must” in Acts 9:6 and then read
Acts 22:l-16); it is to wash away sins (Acts 2:38; 22:l6); and it is in
order to be saved. (Mark l6:l6; I Peter 3:21) If it makes one so little
difference, why fight it?
WORSHIP If it makes no difference how one worships, why not sincerely
worship according to the New Testament? In the first day century, Christians
met on the first day of the week to observe the Lord’s Supper and to hear
God’s word taught. (Acts 20:7) They prayed together and gave of their
finances as God has prospered them. (I Timothy 2:8; I Corinthians
l6:1-2) They sang. (Ephesians 5:l9; Colossians 3:l6) Their music in worship
was specified by God as vocal (“sing”) and there is no
ORGANIZATION In the times of the apostles, each congregation or local church
was overseen and guided by a group of elders (also called bishops, presbyters,
pastors, or shepherds) who answered directly to Christ (Acts l4:23; Titus
1:5; Acts 20:l7). Serving under the oversight of these men were deacons
(Philippians 1:1).
CREED The Bible is our guide to Heaven. We will be judged by the words of Christ. (John 12:48; Acts l7:31) Why not leave the creeds, disciplines, and manuals of men and stand only with the word of God? Help us as we urge men to return to the Bible, because IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE WHAT WE BELIEVE AND DO! It makes the difference between truth and error, right and wrong, humility and stubbornness, and life and death. Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I
will liken him unto a wiseman, which built his house upon a rock: and the
rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon
that house; and It fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
“The churches of Christ salute you.” (Romans l6:16.) |
