“Prove all things; hold
fast that which is good.”
I Thessalonians 5:21
1. IT IS BIBLICAL IN ORIGIN.
It began in Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost following Christ’s
death (Luke 24:45-47; Acts 1:6-8 and chapter 2).
2. IT WAS FOUNDED BY CHRIST.
Matthew 16:18-19.
3. IT WEARS AND HONORS THE NAME OF CHRIST.
Romans 16:16 Colossians 3:l7
Matthew 10:32-33 I Peter 4:15-16
4. CHRIST IS ITS ONLY CREED. THE BIBLE IS ITS ONLY
RULE OF FAITH AND PRACTICE.
II Timothy 3:16-17 John 12:48
Matthew 24:35 Revelation 22:18-19
5. IT IS SCRIPTURAL IN ORGANIZATION.
Each congregation is ruled by a group of elders (also called
bishops, presbyters, pastors, shepherds, and overseers in the
New Testament). I Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9; Acts 14:23
These men are assisted by deacons in their work.
(Philippians 1:1; I Timothy 3:8-10).
There are no synods, hierarchies, district superintendents, etc.
in Christ’s church. Each congregation under its eldership answers
directly to Christ. (I Peter 5:1-7 ).
6. IT WORSHIPS ACCORDING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT PATTERN
On the first day of the week, it meets to partake of
the Lord’s supper, sing, pray, study, and contribute as the New Testament
has commanded, (Acts. 20:7; I Corinthians 16:1-2; Colossians
3:l6; Ephesians 5:19; Luke 18:1).
It rejects methods of worship not prescribed in the New
Testament such as mechanical instruments of music, worship in a foreign
language, “transubstantiation,” consubstantiation,” mass, etc.
7. ITS PREACHERS REFUSE TO WEAR
ARROGANT AND POMPOUS RELIGIOUS TITLES.
Matthew 23:1-12; II Thessalonians.2:1-4.
8. IT TEACHES AND PRACTICES THE PROPER BAPTISM.
The Lord commands an immersion (Romans 6:4; Colossians 2:12)
of penitent believers (Mark l6:15-16; Acts 2:38)
in water (Acts 8:36-38; 10:47-48; I Peter 3:20 –21)
for the remission of sins (Acts2:38, 22:16).
This is the only baptism commanded by the New Testament (Ephesians
4:5).
9. IT URGES CHRISTIAN LIVING.
It upholds devotion to high moral standards, civil obedience,
and godliness (Titus 2:11-l4).
10. IT PLEADS FOR COMPLETE OBEDIENCE TO CHRIST AND PEACE
AND UNITY AMONG ALL MEN ON THE BASIS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT.
John 17:l5-26; I Corinthians 1:l0; Ephesians 4:1-6.
Religious error flourishes where people fail to investigate, study,
and think. It was noble in God's sight when the Bereanns “...received
the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the Scriptures
daily, whether these things were so.” ( Acts.l7:11)
In order to please Christ, we must obey Him-even if it means
changing customs and habits that we have long loved and believed (Hebrews
5:8-9; II Thessalonians 1:7-10; Matthew 10:32-39). Truth and
humility do not fear investigation – they welcome it.
If you are weary with the disunity, confusion, and dogma
of modern religion, we believe that you will welcome the plea made by churches
of Christ – that all may lay aside all human creeds and systems
and live according to the Bible. Let us call Bible things by Bible
names.
Let us do Bible things in Bible ways.
Let us seek to obey Christ in all things.
Let us be simple New Testament Christians – no more and no less.
We invite you to attend the services of the church of Christ.
There you will find a group of humble people seeking only to do Christ’s
will without pomp or fanfare. Come, and worship with
us. A warm welcome awaits you. |
